The World Literature reading group aims to facilitate discussion on issues of and approaches to world literature. This may include readings of specific texts appropriate to the field, or of critical theory that offers definitions and approaches to world literature.
1. Defining World Literature
In recent years, the emerging discourse of world literature has jostled alongside related methodologies and terms, such as comparative literature and postcolonial studies. As such, the group will set out to investigate competing definitions of the field.
2. Reading World Literature
Given that there is no consensus on world literature, the group will work with a broad definition of texts which qualify as world literature. We especially welcome material which crosses national and linguistic boundaries, translated works, and works which challenges us as readers to reflect on issues of place, geography and the world.
